Familiar roots.
A new chapter.
buddyAIM is built with appreciation for the people who made the original messengers feel like home.
The person behind the project
Created by an elder millennial with a soft spot for buddy lists, away messages, and a more personal web. Read the story behind BuddyAIM.
Classic messenger inspirations
- AOL Instant Messenger: its buddy lists, conversation windows, and desktop presence.
- DeadAIM by JDennis.net Ltd: its tabbed conversations and enhancements to AIM.
- Pidgin / Gaim: its approach to bringing different services into one messenger.
Windows and GTK interface conventions also inform the application.
The tools underneath
The application uses Electron, xterm.js, node-pty, ws, and the Claude Agent SDK. Their authors retain their respective credits and licenses. Complete dependency notices accompany the application source and release packages.
About the screenshots
The site uses reviewed application captures with generic demonstration content, public fallback graphics, and original model artwork. These are interface demonstrations, not live coding-agent responses. Original messenger logos, sounds, and imported resource packs are not distributed by this site.
Independent by design
buddyAIM is not affiliated with or endorsed by AOL, the original messenger creators, OpenAI, Anthropic, or other named product owners. Product names belong to their respective owners.
The original application code and this website are MIT licensed. Third-party components remain subject to their own licenses.
